"It's my mom. I'm not an orphan like everyone else. She's in the hospital, and apparently she might die soon. When the doctors told me, I just, I just wanted to hit them. Punch them in the face and tell them they were gonna cure her. I just dont wanna lose her, you know?"
She looked down not really knowing how he felt about his mom dying, but she isn't an orphan either. She has a mom to and knows how its like to support a family. Her dad had lost his job and her and her family to suffer all of his debt. When she was old enough to understand she felt like she wanted to punch him kinda like BlackJack did with the doctors. "I know I don't know what it is like to have you mom die, but I do know what it's like to want to punch someone but you know you can't. You have to realize even though she is one of the most important people to you, the doctors have probable tried everything they can." She bit her lower lip hoping he would understand she was trying to help him.
"I just... dont know what to do anymore."
Moth felt herself take a step forward, trying to resist hugging him. "Maybe it might not just be what the doctors do. It might be what you do to?" She hoped he was listening to her, because even though they had known each other for a long time she still wanted to help him and be there for him.

"I know that, but still, I just wish-" he sighed, "I just wish she wouldnt. It's hard, knowing she's probably not going to live." BlackJack had tried everything, he had tried, and he had no clue what to do. In a way, it was going to be different, he was finally going to be an orphan, and he was, in truth, scared out of his wits. He didn't want his mother gone. She was what he looked forward to at the end of a rough, tiring day. She always had a smile on, and was there to tell him things were gonna get better. In a way, he needed her.
"Wow," he laughed a little, "I'm probably the most selfish street rat on earth." BlackJack shook his head, that was an entirely new thing to feel selfish. Especially when others had it worse.

"I know that, but still, I just wish- I just wish she wouldn't. It's hard, knowing she's probably not going to live."
She could tell he was really sad, and it made her fell sad to. " I know you wish she wouldn't die, and I know I haven't known you that long. But maybe you could pray or something. I mean don't have to tell the other newsies, but that is what I would do. You don't really need the doctors help you could just need gods help?" She hoped he might give it a try, but she doubt he would he was a newsie. "I know it sounds a bit odd but you should try whatever you can. Also I don't think your mom wants to spend her last minutes with you when you are sad. Try to be happy around her I think that is what she would want."
"Wow, I'm probably the most selfish street rat on earth."
"What?" she didn't get why he was saying this. His mom was dyeing and he felt selfish. "How are you acting selfish? Your mom is dyeing and you are upset. All you want to do is let her live. She is your mom you should feel that way. Anyone should feel that way if someone they love is dyeing. I know I would." 'How is it that he is going through a tough time and he feels selfish, but I could probable be the most selfish person in New York and I won't even fell bad about it' Moth couldn't stop thinking. Moth didn't know what to do. Someone who's mom might die is standing in front of her and all she could do was stand there. Moth felt like she needed to hug him or something, but she didn't know him that well and all she could do was stand there. She bit her lower lip and pulled her hair back behind her ear. She wasn't sure what he was going to do it was like she felt a little frozen.

"I know it sounds a bit odd but you should try whatever you can. Also I don't think your mom wants to spend her last minutes with you when you are sad. Try to be happy around her I think that is what she would want."
He nodded, "yea, I try to be happy around her as much as I can. Actually I'm always happy around her. She's just a nice person to be around. You'd probably like her, she kind of has a way of understanding people." That was one of the reasons people liked her. BlackJack's mom just had a way of bringing people happiness without even trying. Maybe it was because of something she told him. To follow the first Ammendment of America, 'Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.' That's what life was about.
"How are you acting selfish? Your mom is dyeing and you are upset. All you want to do is let her live. She is your mom you should feel that way. Anyone should feel that way if someone they love is dyeing. I know I would."
"Well," he said, "Most kids dont have families. They lost their parents and there was no one there for them, but they suck it up. Kids dont have moms and I'm being selfish for just wanting her for myself. But then again, she's my mom, and if dad didn't want us then he cant have her." Now, THAT was a selfish thing for BlackJack to say, but it was true! Daddy dearest left, so there was no reason for him to ever visit him, or his mom. If his father even came within seeing distance of his mom, BlackJack would hurt him. No one walked out on his mom.

"yea, I try to be happy around her as much as I can. Actually I'm always happy around her. She's just a nice person to be around. You'd probably like her, she kind of has a way of understanding people."
Moth felt herself smile. It was sweet that he is happy around his mom. "She kinda like you. I mean I have only known you for a little while, but yet you still seem to just know who I am without knowing hardly anything about me." Blackjack seemed to understand everything about Moth. She looked at the sun to see it was finally about to preach the water. It was nice the way it looked like their were two suns. And the water seemed to be filled with diffrent colors like the sky.
"Well, Most kids dont have families. They lost their parents and there was no one there for them, but they suck it up. Kids dont have moms and I'm being selfish for just wanting her for myself. But then again, she's my mom, and if dad didn't want us then he cant have her."
She swallowed the saliva left in her throat. Him saying that was brought back memories of when her dad left. "You realize, you aren't the only one who's dad left them!" She felt herself blert out. She felt bad aying that while his mom was in the hospital. He was weird one mineute he felt selfish then the next he was feeling sorry for himself. "I am sorry about that. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings if I did."

He smirked, "I dont know you, I just guess. I'm good at that sometimes." BlackJack was a card counter, not a mind reader. He won by smarts, not guessing. It wasn't him who could read people, he could read the cards, and in a way the cards and the people were alike. Everyone was a card, and sometimes you got played with someone good, some not so good. It all depended on how the deck was shuffled. Maybe, someday, it'd all be different, there'd be a new deck, where you never lost at all, that'd be nice.
"It's fine," he replied, "Lots of kids have parents who abandon them. It's cause of the economy, and how adults suck at trying to keep money in check when kids, are out on the streets starving because the government doesn't want them to have money." BlackJack had a rant on all of this. It was what kept him going most of the time. You din't have to be an idiot for anyone to not see that he hated the government. They put card counters like him in jail for not breaking any important rules.

"I dont know you, I just guess. I'm good at that sometimes."
"I guess you are." Moth seemed to not be able to stop smiling. She loved being around people and all but that never really made her smile. 'This was something different' Moth couldn't stop thinking. 'But in a good way different.' She loved the way she couldn't stop smiling. It kinda reminded her of when her family was normal, but it wasn't and Moth knew that. She really wanted a dad because it was one of two things she noticed in New York. Girls and their fathers or the paper head lines.
"It's fine, Lots of kids have parents who abandon them. It's cause of the economy, and how adults suck at trying to keep money in check when kids, are out on the streets starving because the government doesn't want them to have money."
Moth took a deep breath in and out. "I know exactly what you mean." She really did! Except her dad didn't even care and she listening to her dads late nigh fighting sessions with her mom, he would of made Moth leave and he would of stayed. "It's kinda like the government would rather have little kids homeless then living with their families." Moth hated knowing that, she loved the younger newsies and wondered how anyone would ever abandon them. They were adorable nice and had well manners. Moth turned to look at the sunset. She noticed it was about to disappear but the had about ten more minutes til' the sky would start to fade to black. She looked at Blackjack and started to walk back to sit on the edge of the dock again. She sat down, but this time instead of putting her feet in the water, she sat and hugged her knees tight and watched the fish swim by.

"It's kinda like the government would rather have little kids homeless then living with their families."
"The government can crumble for all I care," he replied, pacing, "We've already beat Pullitzer, so why cant we get the government to do things for us? Besides, it aint fair!" ok, now BlackJack was gonna rant. "If they really care about their country then we'd have food every night and better hospitals, but noooo we've gotta be at the bottom, while the president just sits there and says he's gonna do something to change it. We dont need change later we need change now!"
Yep, BlackJack was a ranter, of nature of course. If you got him on a role, then you'd pretty much see all the sides he saw. And if you didn't agree with him, you were bound to hear some more ranting about it. Not his fault that he had to prove himself right! Maybe that was why they never took card counters to jail, no evidence, and no prove. That was what kept most card counters safe, but others couldn't go back to any casino because they had been wiped out completely. Zip, out of the game.

Moth couldn't help but laugh. She though it was funny how he could probable go on for hours. "How can you do that?" she didn't really know what she was doing, but she did. Moth was not a girlie girl per say, but she happened to be taking like a girl at the moment. She had seen the older girls talk to guys like that when she was younger but she had never talked to people like that. But some how she found it fun.
She noticed the sun was all the way set but she could see the last of the rays popping out from behind the ocean. It looked like a picture in a painting. "Don't you just love the sunset?" And there she went. Off in her own world not really paying attention, but getting distracted. "I mean, even though the sun isn't up you can still see it's pretty rays. I also love the colors in the sky. They remind me of spring and how all the flowers just bloom." Oh no! She was getting distracted and she couldn't stop herself. It was like a disease had taken over her and just couldn't stop changing subjects. Moth hated when she did that because it usually ended up in confusion with her and the other person. It was funny how the people reacted to the confusion though.

"How can you do that?"
"Do what?" he asked, wondering what she meant. Sure, he ranted, but how did he do what? Rant? Well, anyone could rant, you just had to have the right words. Davey taught him about that, that you have to use the right words. Maybe it was a hidden talent, ranting. BlackJack could be an MC at one of those carnivals or something. Advertising could be easy, he thought, but then again, card counting was his game. It was what he did, and it was what he was good at. What could he say? It was a natural thing for him.
"I mean, even though the sun isn't up you can still see it's pretty rays. I also love the colors in the sky. They remind me of spring and how all the flowers just bloom."
He looked at her. Sudden change in topic. 'Maybe she's one of those hyper kids,' he thought. "Yea, sunsets remind me of how nothing can really stay." 'kind of like with my mom,' he thought starkily. Ok, so maybe now was a bad time to be glumb and dumb, but still. Sunsets did that to him. They made BlackJack a bit emotional. Why he had no clue, they just did that too him, maybe because they made you think a bunch. Why he didn't know, they just did.

Moth looked up at Blackjack and noticed the confused look on his face. It was the one everyone gave her every now and then. When people first started looking at her that way it made her feel embarrassed. After a while she had gotten used to it but it didn't bug her anymore. She noticed the sun had almost set and she could see the moon in its hazy faze. "It's getting a little late, isn't it?" She knew it was a stupid question to ask, but it was hard for not to talk for Moth. Especially when there weren't that many people close to talk around them.
Moth noticed that Blackjack was standing up still and wanted to stand up too. She turned around on her butt to face him and reached her hand out. "Help me up?" While she was waiting for her hand it felt like she was holding it out forever. At that moment she knew she liked him. She didn't know why she did. She didn't know hardly anything about him, but she liked him it was that easy to say. She couldn't stop smiling the whole time she had been around him. But it was really nice.

"Help me up?"
He nodded, and helped her up, "I'll see you around New York I guess." BlackJack started walking down the dock towards land, to get back to Manhattan. "I'll meet up with you again sometime Moth. It was great talking to you." He felt like he had gotten so much off his chest, and it was nice. He'd have to come to Brooklyn more to probably get more off his chest, but for now, he was perfectly fine now that he had gotten so much off his chest in one day. Life was good.
Walking back to Manhattan, he felt a whole lot better, no one had to know about his mom, and it was better that way. BlackJack would have rather suffered alone, and Moth had just so happened to provide an outlet. Sure, his friends would probably try to make him tell what was bugging him but that wouldn't work. He already told someone so they would just have to lay off. There was nothing to tell them, now that it had been told, and they would never have to know about his mother, well, maybe in the end they would know, maybe.
