Babydoll hoisted her small bag of belongings higher on her shoulder. She had just entered the Manhattan lodging house. She'd done so while she'd been in Staten Island. But those visits had been few and far between. There was one major difference in this visit, however. This time, she was staying. Her name was going back in the book on the front desk.
Frankly, it was long overdue. All she'd probably needed only a week away from Manhattan to sort herself out. Staying the whole summer had only made her realize where her real home was. Which is why she had decided to go back.
The building felt and appeared welcoming, and to an extent smelled the same, unless one was in the boy's washroom. Those had always smelled on the less-than-fresh side. She smiled at this thought and moved to the front desk. She picked up the stick of lead and signed her name on the first available line. After she observed her signature for a moment, Babydoll started up the stairs, hoping her old bunk wasn't taken. If it had been she wouldn't be to beat up over it. It was just a place to sleep. All that mattered was that she was finally back home.
Babydoll dropped her things off by an empty, untouched bunk and looked around. It didn't look any different, which was nice. She brushed off her hands and made a quick round through the bunks and washroom, then made her way to the kitchen, scanning for a familiar face around the corner or a voice overheard from upstairs.
