Street entered the quiet and coolness of the library silently. This was unusual for her. Her large grey eyes seemed to swallow up her face as she looked upon the shelves of books. The floor was comfortingly cool on her bare feet. Any other time, she would have felt bad for leaving smudges, but not this time. There were books, thousands of them and billions of words. And she could not read a single one of them.
She headed straight for the desk directly across from the doors. She peered over the edge at the kind old lady there. "'Cuse me, Missus... Is da Librarian in taday?" Street asked in a whisper. The woman looked at her, recognized her, but sadly shook her head. Street nodded and lowered herself off her tippy toes. "Alright. Thank ya." She murmured, then moved away quickly, looking for the picture books.
It was her sanctuary, and the Librarian was her guide. He would read to her, so long as she talked to him about the Civil War and such. He loved to reminisce. And Street loved to imagine different worlds. Her favorite so far was Oliver Twist. She loved the adventure, and she identified with Oliver and the Artful Dodger.
Street began to wander up and down the aisles, touching the spines of the books as she went. She stared at one, willing the letters to make sense to her. They did not. Just squiggles. She bit her lip and tugged on her ear, wondering what she should do.
Someone was up the aisle from her. She slide over to them, wincing when her bare feet make a sound, and tugged on their sleeve. "'Cuse me, but could ya help me? I wanna know what the book there says but... I can't..." Street gestured helplessly to the book, embarrassed at her shortcomings. "I can't read it." She said finally, giving up.
