name
deliverance cosette chevalier
age
seventeen
the looks
deliverance is tall and graceful looking and she carries herself gracefully. she had black hair that likes to curl, dark eyes, and her skin is a lovely tanned shade that never fades. she is shapely, but her clothes do not reveal it. she keeps her hair and skin healthy, so they glow all the time. she loves pretty clothes and keeping herself pretty.
the past
deliverance was born in new orleans, louisiana in 1882 to madame claire dureaux and monsieur james chevalier. that's where the normalcy ends. her father is a rich landowner. her mother, for lack of a better term, is a mulatto, or one black parent, one white. this makes deliverance an quadroon. her parents are not married to each other. james is married to a woman named katherine and her mother is a single woman of color who have affairs professionaly. james pays for everything, and her mother reamins quiet. however, everyone, including katherine, knows claire is james' mistress.
deliverance was named so because her mother was believed to be cursed by a cajun voo-doo woman. the woman told her that she would never have a child with her lover, unless claire had a change of heart. she did. after three miscarriages and her only son, george, falling down a flight of stairs and dying, she came clean to katherine. she went to the chevalier mansion and told the woman everything. katherine accepted her and promised that claire would be a friend first, the other woman second.
nine months later, deliverance was born. james doted upon his only daughter with claire, and for a while, his only child with his mistress. deliverance was loved not only by her father and mother, but by katherine and her half silblings as well. her father spared no expense. for her fifth birthday, deliverance recieved a minature pony that she was able to ride around on, and even have a small carriage pulled for her entertainment. though privileaged beyond what most children of her status and birth had any right to expect, she remained a grounded child. at the age of ten, she was sent to private school in new orleans, only to be rejected upon arrival for her mother being part african-american.
this crushed deliverance. she was not use to being rejected like this. katherine attempted to softened the blow by allowing her husband's love child to share her own children's tutor. deliverance learned quickly. the tutor sent word to his sister in new york, asking her to allow deliverance to attend a higher form of education at her school. she said yes, but that is was not the right time. they had no positions available.
only a year and a half ago did the letter come that said the tutor's sister, madame benoit as claire called her, finally had room for deliverance at her school. her father bought her a new wardrobe and sent her north on a train with a trusted servant. though harrassed slightly, deliverance made it without great harm and settled cheerfully in. the servant left for louisiana again.
six months ago, she recieved word that her mother had fallen out with her father and katherine and therefore, her school tuition would no longer be paid by katherine or james (since katherine had persuaded him not to pay). she was left to fine her own way. she fell in with the newsies of the bronx and has settled quite nicely into their lodging house. she does not like to sell papers, but she does, along with whatever odd jobs she can wrangle up.
she misses her mother, full siblings, half siblings, her father, katherine, new orleans, louisiana, and the softness of her hands.
who am i?
deliverance loves making her own way in the world, even if she misses the privileaged lifestyle she once lead. she is not afraid to state her own opinion, but can be shy when surrounded by people that are stronger then her. both physically and mentally. she loves fine things, but knows she cannot afford them. she does not worry about such things as marriage, because of how she grew up-surrounded by women who were mistresses, yet still respected and prosperous. she is not quite interested in relationships, but she does love talking to people, meeting new friends, and flirting with boys. she is very easy going and goes with the flow. she does what she needs to do to survive.
