Jumping straight out of bed, Les scrambled to get ready for the morning delivery. He grabbed the hat off the bed table and went to wake his brother. Shaking David over and over, Les turned to talking. "David! David! We're gonna miss Cowboy and the rest of the Newsies!" he cried. Eventually, David rose from the bed. Les ran out the door and slid down the banister all the way to the bottom. He glanced up the stairs to see David still at the top. "David!! Come on!! We're gonna be late!!"
Les waited for what felt like hours. He waited and pondered the day's work. I'd better turn up my Last-Pape act... he thought. He remembered the grumpy man that had actually refused to buy his "last pape". It's hard to believe... But the nice lady bought my pape and gave me a little extra to buy something sweet... Les thought about the cake that he'd bought. He brought it home and shared with David, Sarah, and Jack. He'd offered his parents some, but his mom said that he should enjoy his hard work. That lemon sugar cake was delicious.
Finally David reached the ground floor. Les grabbed his hand and dragged him out the door. "Let's go!" he said. The brother's arrived at the Newstand shortly there after. As usual, Racetrack and the rest of them were harassing the Delancey brothers. "Why are the Delancey brothers always so mean?" Les asked. David looked at his brother and opened his mouth to answer when Jack Kelly appeared behind them and put an arm around Les's brother's shoulder. "Hey there Davey," Jack said. "What are the headlines today?" David asked.
Les laughed. He looked pointedly at his brother and said in his best Jack impersonation. "Headlines don't sell papes, Newsies sell papes!" he said. Jack smiled and walked away to buy his usual 100 papes. "David? How many papes are we getting today?" Les asked. He always wanted to sell as many papes as Jack, but his brother was always too practical to go bigger and better. "Well," David said, skimming over the headlines. "Good headlines, good newsies, I think we can peddle 100 papes today." Les smiled. "Yea! Can we sell with Jack today?"
Jack came back and nodded at David. David left to go buy the papes. "I think we can sell together," Jack said, kneeling down to Les's level. Les grinned broadly. Jack did the typical hand shake, spitting in his palm first. Les did like wise. "You been practicing ya act?" Les nodded.
He took one of Cowboy's papes and held it up like a sickly little boy. He gave Jack the puppy dog eyes and coughed into his free hand. "Please sir. Buy me last pape? I wanna get some medicine..." He coughed again and held the newspaper forward with a shaking arm. Les acted like he was about to faint and swooned on his feet. "That's good. Real good," Jack told him and Les beamed. Jack said I was good! he thought and handed back the pape that he'd taken. David returned with their 100 papes. "Ready?" David asked. Les said his usual "Yea," he said quietly. David looked into one of the papes and shouted off headlines. He handed Les his "last pape" and Les stumbled sickly over to a nice looking lady to try to make the sale.
